So I have always seen someone take Maelstrom and whack a person 3 times to kill anyone frozen by ice, but I was just curious where exactly this came from.
Reading the description it simply states that Maelstrom cuts through the ice to affect anyone trapped. So 1 black to an unarmored person is enough to take them
out, you dont really need 3.

Perhaps it is because 3 hits to the torso of anybody - no matter what armor they have (barring special effects or the Bracers) - will take them out?

I was always taught that the sword just frees the person from the ice but the last hit affects. Example, if you hit a person in the shield three times, they
are unaffected.

Fingers it is only nescessary for some one in plate 3 black to plate = mortal usually good enough if they are frozen and have to thaw before a rez can work.
Malestrom does not free the person from the ice it penetrates the ice and hits the player three hits is what it takes to kill some one with the most armor they can wear, over kill but that way people are sure.

Yeah I figured it was to kill someone in plate or a mage. Ive seen people hit different locations though (which if the victim were wearing plate, they would
live) and Ive heard people say "it takes 3 hits to kill someone frozen" so was just wondering how that rumour started. The only things to free the
person are Dispel Magic and Burning Hands (and to a lesser extent Fireball hehe)

Isnt the Magistrate's job to clarify rules?
If so, could Cormac clarify what happens and what is fair play.

don't think anything needs to be clarified, it's written quite clearly:
Maelstrom This mighty two-handed sword was first used by the Frost Giants dwelling in the frozen wastes above Valdimar. The Maelstrom functions as a two-handed, enchanted great sword, in addition to having the ability to generate Ice Storms. The player in possession of Maelstrom may use the magic of the blade to hurl up to 3 Ice Storms at his opponents per day. To utilize this ability, the possessor must say, "I summon Ice from Maelstrom!" and then throw a white spell ball at the target; failure to declare the incantation line will result in the spell not going into effect. The spell balls may be the ones accompanying the Maelstrom or those belonging to a Mage. The effects of the Ice Storm act exactly as they are written in the Mage spell Ice Storm, see Chapter Six: Spells and Magic. Only the Maelstrom may cut through the ice to cause damage to the victim, although the victim can also be freed and/or damaged according to the rules of Ice Storm. The possessor also receives the benefit of immunity to all
coldbased attacks. Although Maelstrom is considered to be a great sword, those unable to wield a great sword may still use the Maelstrom's magical
abilities, so long as it is not wielded as a great sword in their hands. Once the three spell balls have been thrown, the magic of the sword is depleted unless
recharged by a Mage, in Hades, or at the discretion of an Elder

with maelstrom? if you hit armor, it takes a black hit. if you hit a shield or weapon, no effect.
for example. bard is wearing plate and gets hit with ice storm. i walk by with maelstrom and hit him twice in the back and then my third shot hits his shield instead (or an arm vambrace). i walk away thinking he is dead. after 5 min of icestorm he is alive, and has no torso armor since the 2 blacks took it out, and 1 shot to his vambrace (or nothing additional if I hit his shield). he still has to wait till the 5 min of ice storm is up, my 3 hits dont dispel the ice around him. On a different line, the description of the sword says "Once the three spell balls have been thrown, the magic of the sword is depleted unless recharged
by a Mage, in Hades, or at the discretion of an Elder."
Does this depletion include immunity to cold based attacks and the ability to cut through the icestorm? Exactly which magic aspects of the sword are depleted? |

Good catch. Looks like a proposal/ruling is in order. As it is written, no qualifier on "depleted" means totally depleted, and I kinda doubt that was
the original intent.

i would say the magic of throwing the spell balls is depleted, but it definitely could use clearer wording.

Official Ruling: After all three spellballs are thrown, the only thing that is depleted is the
ability to throw spellballs.
