This Sunday will be my 6th time coming out. But I had to say something... I whole-heartedly agree with everyone else's demurring on this issue. Just the thought of being affiliated with the Jerry Springer Show in any way, shape, or form makes me queasy. As I stated to Dienekes and Moose this morning, the show is a circus. It's a cruel, vicious cesspool that only the absolute slop of society finds any kind of entertainment in. Guests are brought on there for two reasons: to be humiliated, and to cause a spectacle. It's painful for me to think of the verbal (and potentially physical) abuse that some of my new friends could endure at the hands of the lunatics in a Jerry Springer audience. And what about the people who decide that they hate us enough that they want to come to a Darkon event and attack someone? Remember the man who was murdered after being on Jenny Jones because he was gay? Remember the countless other media horror stories of people being attacked/killed for being on a talk show? Darkon + Jerry Springer = a recipe for disaster. If Andrew and Devin go on Jerry Springer, I truly believe it will be a terrible mistake. Not only will they be humiliated, mocked and degraded.... they will cause us, as a community, to be humiliated, mocked and degraded in return. Jerry Springer's job is to make people look as bad as they possibly can look, so that everyone who's watching can look down on them. Unlike many folks who have gotten into Darkon because of what they've seen and heard word of mouth, web, even recent exposure to the movie and such, people viewing the show will get an entirely different and VERY BAD perspective on what Darkon is. This will hurt the game. Do I give a rats @$$ about the thoughts of some inbred A-hole in Podunk WV who F'd his own mother and daughter (at the same time) and is watching the show because he's up directly after Shapwin? No I could care less what he thinks… But this isn't about that. It's about exposure doing detriment to the game. And while you say that you don't think it will hurt... do you really think it's a good idea? Really???

This is Angmarth (Delvekion for you old EQ folks) of Belegarth. I agree that you should convince him to NOT do this. It will only make us (all boffer groups) look rediculous. I thought the movie was great publicity and well done. I have quite a bit of experience in this. I travel to all the major conventions and have dealt with most of the big names in the gaming industry. I am in charge of the Edhellen Armoury demonstration crew and I have quite a bit of experience in doing my best to put a good spin on what we do. I have done 20+ major interviews about boffering in the last 8 years (Maxim, LA Times, Tech TV, G4, CNN, other various papers), so I can tell you in my PROFESSIONAL opinion that this has the potential to be a MONUMENTALLY bad idea. If this were a Mordomian thinking about doing this BS, I can guaran-F-ing-tee you that every Mordomian would not only get on the ass of the moron trying to do this (quite frankly I can't see any Mordomian actually thinking this a good idea), but we'd be having an emergency meeting to discuss kicking said person out of Mordom if they actually went through with it. Hell… it shouldn't have even gotten to the boards for discussion in the first place if Laconia was doing its job. They knew about it, they should do something about it! If this were Mordom, it would have been cleared up immediately and no one would have caught wind about it until after said person was spanked… certainly I would have never asked Darkon if they thought this was a good idea if one of us went on the JS show…. And while a ONE newbie in Laconia said they thought it was a bad idea, Dienekes (sp?), who started this thread, seemed to be unsure how Darkon was going to take this… WHICH IS MORONIC IN ITSELF! Jesus! So too if this were someone from Elidor, Bloody Axe, Moot, Nurgle, Aquilonia...etc... meaning any country that polices its members and/or has some general common sense, this would not/could not take place. But with Laconia...anything ultra moronic is always possible. So yes, this absolutely has to do with Laconia, Thrush… because Shapwin is not only representing himself, but he is Laconian and one of the mainstay Laconians at that! It's not like he's some spud who just joined Darkon and has no idea of what's going on… Christ… he's been around since the inception of Laconia! If he does this, he will be doing this as a Laconian, not "Shapwin the LARPer", no if ands or buts about it. For a few folks in Laconia to say: well I think it's a bad idea too… isn't enough. A country is responsible for the actions of its members and thusly Lacoina should be the first to deal with this, but they have proven time and again that they don't police their own. That is the issue, Thrush. It should have never gotten to the boards in the first place for us to get in an uproar. If Laconia was doing its job as a country this would be a non issue. Its easy. I echo what Inox said, Springer and that ilk will make Darkon look freskish, cultish and dangerous, and can damage the game irreparably. They are interested in creating a sideshow, they are NOT INTERESTED IN SHOWING DARKON IN A POSITIVE LIGHT, and guys, you will NOT be able to move the conversation into a way to try to make it look positive. These guys have decades of experience under their belt in manipulating and maneuvering this kind of interchange, and they will edit the final product it to show what they want to show. Think how the negative press will affect us getting proper coverage for insurance, legal representation and all the things that happen backstage so that we can all play the sport that we enjoy. Never mind the day to day issues of getting and maintaining battle sites and new players. This WILL have a negative impact, the question is how much and how far reaching. I also urge you to reconsider doing this. It's not just going to effect us, but every other boffer group as well. Jerry Springer is a guilty pleasure... which means that, while no one will admit to it, LOTS AND LOTS OF PEOPLE WATCH IT!!!! That's why he's had his own show for.. what, 10 years? Not to mention his own MOVIE. The demand for Springer's BS is enormous. Now, think of the potential impact. This makes Darkon look bad. And Belegarth. And Dagorhir. And every other group that has any sort of boffer combat or larping whatsoever. And who gets the blame? That's right. Us. Not Shaplin, because that random Dag group in Indiana (or wherever) that lost their permit to use the park they fight at doesn't know who Shaplin is, but they've probably heard of Darkon by now. We DO have our own movie, after all. Even if he goes on without using the name Darkon, Springer will make him and everyone else who participates in his hobby look like freaks. I think this needs to be addressed by the group as a whole, not just by Laconia, and not just on this forum. This is a serious issue, and in my opinion, if these people decide to go through with the Springer show, they should be removed from Darkon permanently. Anyone who shows that kind of blatant disregard for not only us, but other boffer groups and people is completely self-centered and irresponsible, and doesn't need to be a part of Darkon. We've been brought here for a reason, Be it fate or eternal treason. Souls will be saved, and mutinies waged, As we plead for something to believe in.

I decided to write you guys and maybe clear up some of your worries/concerns/or just plan out ridicule.. about this most exciting, and obviously, "saucy transmission" this message board has seen for a while... OK. for the record the Jerry Show was MY idea. NOT Andrews.. He had nothing in it. So all the shit talking about him can be left about his sword fighting on the field... Personally, I could give a shit about any of you (except maybe for Banner, Moose, & Barnekel) I was referred to this site after MY BOYFRIEND called me to tell me about the dramarama it was causing before, sadely, his phone died.. So you folks can stop blowing up his phone...he is currently out of minutes. In MY mind this was going to be a cool thing. I THOUGHT that maybe a few of you coming out, to sword fight, with Andrew, would be a "one of a kind" way to introduce "Foam Sword Fighting" not Darkon, not Laconia.. to the world.. oops! My mistake. OK. Now to what the producers had to say: "We have never had an episode like this" "It's going to be PG 13 for a change" "We can't wait to meet you" "we would like the crowd to come up and sword fight too" and of course my fave- "We are fling you out to Chicago for FREE, Paying for all your food and hotel room......" Everybody involved in this show (ie. Andrew, Me, Moose) KNOWS what the Jerry Show is all about... They knew they were going to be nerding themselves out...Hell! Moose was excited about running across the stage naked and getting his Jerry Beads! Which brings me to the point. Not everybody thinks like YOU.. I don't play Darkon, I don't go to many events, I don't have a "in character" name, and nor do I want one...BUT I DO support Darkon and Andrew. For those of you who don't know...I went to the NYC premiere. I carried that heavy ass foam sword bag down like 20 blocks with a chain as a strap. I was there when the 600 people plus cheered for Skip, Andrew, and Moose. I was there at the movie showing. I was there at the after party. I was there at Grand Central Station when they Sword faught for a crowd of people...who were not all so pleased by what they saw....some shouted "Barbairans" some shouted other negative opinions... but most didn't. BUT I was THERE.. WERE YOU? Point is, I was trying to get Sword Fighting more exposure..and when Jerry said is your life like like a Jerry Show? I called...cause it is! I don't see any of you doing anything to promote, The Game, Darkon, Foam Sword fighting..anything.... So hate on my for making that call....At least I actually did something, not bitch on a message board no one comes to, but perhaps.. a few cool people..and a few others who couldn't get laid in a morge... When I came to my first Darkon camp out this is what happened: I was immidiatly hit on by almost every dude there, which was flattering, but still really creepy...Only ONE female talked to me, the others treated me as if I had the plague...It was NOT an inviting atmosphere, and if I was coming to join, I would have thought twice about coming out a second time.
